Welcome to the Centre of Welding Technologies and Metallurgy Research
The Centre aims to support the welding industry by identifying gaps in knowledge and addressing these gaps through a combination of new educational programs and applied research.
Our primary goals are to improve the understanding of welding throughout the manufacturing sector in British Columbia and to facilitate the adoption of new and evolving welding technologies so as to increase efficiencies and hence the competitiveness of our welding sector.
Courses & Education
We have online, self-paced, part-time courses to provide training to managers, engineers, technologists, purchasers and other professionals who work in the fabrication and manufacturing industry specifically as it relates to welding and welded fabrication.
For groups or customizations to our educational offerings please contact us.
Research
BCIT’s focus is on industrial welding research with real weld applications. In addition to BCIT’s welder training facility and mechanical testing labs (located on BCIT’s Burnaby campus) we have access to Seaspan’s centre for welding excellence, a fully equipped welding research laboratory based at their Vancouver shipyards location. We are actively seeking new partners for collaborative research and are eligible for NSERC and MITACS grants and awards as a provider of post secondary education.

Partners
Major finacial support for the Centre is generously provided by Seaspan.

We have two ongoing NSERC/MITACS supported research projects with SFU’s School of Mechatronics Systems Engineering
