Our People: Meet Svitlana Mykulska

Svitlana Mykulska receives 2026 Employee Excellence award

Putting people at the core of everything we do is paramount at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT). We’re proud to be a people-first organization, where employees are supported, valued, and empowered to thrive, both personally and professionally.

Through the Our People series on BCIT News, we celebrate the passion, expertise, and impact of individuals who help shape a better future at BCIT and beyond.

Meet Svitlana Mykulska, Administrative Assistant to the Associate Dean, BCIT Marine Campus, and a BCIT 2026 Employee Excellence recipient in the Unsung Hero category.

What does it mean to you to be a 2026 Employee Excellence Award recipient?

It is a huge honour to receive this award and share the stage with such amazing recipients. However, being nominated by the people I work with daily is what truly matters most. Knowing they recognized my work and took the time to submit a nomination is priceless.

Looking back on the past year, what do you think contributed most to you receiving this recognition?

It was a turbulent year, with budget cuts, academic and staffing challenges. When I joined BCIT at the end of 2024, campus spirit was quite low. My goal was to help change that. I focused on bringing positivity, support, and a sense of joy to the campus, and over time, that shift became noticeable.

Is there a particular project, initiative, or achievement from 2025-2026 that you are especially proud of?

My ongoing project is the well-being of our BMC family. It costs nothing but yields incredible results. Simple things—like bringing bubbles to the patio to release stress after a meeting, organizing an outdoor picnic lunch, or hosting a holiday ornament workshop—spark joy and truly bond our team. In the long run, it contributes to healthy working environment.

How have your colleagues or team supported your success over the past year?

Success is mutual. My team knows I advocate for them and hold myself to high standards, and they meet me with that same dedication.it resulted in trust, support and collaborative spirit.

Whether I reach out for help with work-related tasks or organizing team activities, I consistently see strong engagement. Knowing that both leadership and colleagues will support any initiative I take motivates me to do more.

What aspect of BCIT’s workplace culture has helped you thrive in your role or project?

The openness to change and strong leadership support. The Marine team knows I always look for the best outcomes. Rather than accepting historical processes just because “that’s how it’s always been done,” the culture allows me to find newer, better ways to operate.

What’s next for you – any goals, upcoming projects, or aspirations on the horizon?

I am currently in my second year of the MBA program. Each course gives me a deeper understanding of BCIT’s processes and operations. When I started, I brought years of academic knowledge and life experience. Now, I am excited to complement that with business administration knowledge, apply it in my daily work, and contribute to meaningful improvements and innovations for the benefit of our school.
