After 23 years in a local dental laboratory, Farhan Baig was ready for change. The turning point came when former coworkers—now wastewater treatment operators—shared their success stories. Their guidance made the leap feel possible and led him to the BCIT Fundamentals of Water and Wastewater Associate Certificate program.
For Farhan, the program’s flexibility was key: local and online learning options allowed him to keep working while studying, a critical factor for someone with family responsibilities and deep roots in the Lower Mainland. The program also included a three-month work experience component, which opened the door to his first role at the Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant as a Utility Worker I.
Farhan’s determination to learn and grow quickly set him apart. Just two months after joining, he advanced to the Trucked Liquid Waste Attendant role—a position that offered hands-on training in Intermediate First Aid, Technical Rescue, and utility equipment operation. These new skills were more than certifications; they became the building blocks for his ultimate goal of becoming an operator.
His commitment didn’t go unnoticed. After several contract extensions, Farhan achieved his EOCP Level I certification, officially earning the title of Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator I. “I always knew I wanted to be an operator,” he shares. “That was my main goal.”
Today, Farhan holds EOCP Level IV certification and works as a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator IV—a true testament to perseverance and continuous learning. Farhan credits his success to the mentorship and camaraderie of the Iona Island Operations team. “Coming to work and enjoying the work was a big change for me,” he reflects. Now, Farhan is paying it forward by mentoring junior operators and sharing the same guidance that helped him transform his own career.
Farhan’s story is a powerful reminder that with determination, support, and a willingness to learn, new opportunities are always within reach.
