BCIT Electrical apprentice named 2026 Dakota Prep Fellow

Melodie Watkins

BCIT Electrical apprentice Melody Watkins is being recognized as a 2026 Dakota Prep Fellow after a career change from fine dining to the electrical trade.

Before entering the Electrical program at BCIT, Melody worked as a trained baker and second chef. She enjoyed the hands-on work, fast pace, and team environment, but the long hours, weekends, and holidays made it difficult to balance work and family life.

During the pandemic, while working part time as a lunch supervisor at her daughter’s elementary school, Melody saw an electrician arrive in a school district van. The moment sparked her interest in the trade and led her to apply.

What began as a practical decision quickly became the right fit.

“I learned that electrical is not just receptacles, switches and bulbs. I discovered motor control part way through foundations and I absolutely loved it.”

That interest led Melody toward PLC programming, robotics, motor control centres, relays, and troubleshooting automation systems. She is now focused on building a long-term career in industrial control.

Melody has excelled in her training, completing Level 2 technical training with a 90% standing. She was also hired out of the Electrical Foundation program as a student employee at BCIT, where she helped build control cabinets and training boards used by other apprentices.

In April 2026, Melody won gold in the Electrical Wiring category at the Skills Canada BC Competition, earning a place at the National Skills Canada Competition in Toronto.

“My time at BCIT has meant so much to me. I’ve learned from amazing instructors and classmates from BCIT Electrical who believed in me and helped me see what I was capable of. Winning gold at Skills BC felt like a shared achievement, and I’m so grateful for the training and support that helped get me here.”

Clarence Burlock, Department Head, Electrical Trades, has seen Melody’s strengths as both a student and employee.

“What impresses me most is her ability to inspire and engage others. Melody fosters a collaborative environment where team members feel valued and empowered to contribute their best work.”

That same collaborative approach shapes how Melody supports her classmates through group chats, shared problem-solving, study support, and a welcoming classroom environment.

The Dakota Prep Fellowship recognizes electrical students and apprentices who demonstrate leadership, mentorship, and a commitment to supporting others in the trade. As a 2026 Fellow, Melody will receive access to exam preparation resources and a tuition grant to support the next stage of her training.

Congratulations, Melody!
