Putting people at the core of everything we do is paramount at the British Columbia Institute of Technology. We are committed to ensuring our people — those who make BCIT distinct, are developing while feeling valued, supported, and connected.
BCIT is a people-first organization. We aim to celebrate our employees by sharing their stories through the Our People series. The series features BCIT’s extraordinary employees who share a strong sense of pride and ambition for the Institute and make up our diverse community.
Get to know Karen Collins, Senior Director, Safety, Security, and Emergency Management. Karen leads a strong and passionate team that works hard to ensure the safety, security and resiliency of the BCIT community.
What has been your most memorable moment working at BCIT?
It’s hard to pick one moment, but I would have to say that interacting with students generally is, by far, my favourite thing! Here’s a photo of one of my Human Remains Recovery Courses (yes I am in there somewhere!).

What do you enjoy the most about working in post-secondary education?
It’s never the same day twice!
What projects or initiatives are you excited about?
I look forward to working with my SSEM team to find new and innovative ways to engage the community and bring health and safety, security, fire safety, business continuity, and emergency management learnings, opportunities and challenges to the forefront.
Do you have a favourite spot or activity at the BCIT campuses?
I really like grabbing a coffee and then finding a random spot on campus to just sit and observe how the people and physical spaces intersect; there is always something to learn or take away. I pick a different place each time (akin to ‘Where’s Waldo’ except it’s ‘Where’s KC’!).
Do you have any hobbies outside of work?
I am in a company/competitive adult lyrical ballet and jazz group (with my eldest daughter)—we compete across the province.
