This week on Wednesday, February 10th 2:45 – 3:45 pm @ Library, room 303, there is going to be a workshop on study skills. In this workshop, you can meet top BCIT students, peer tutors, and conversation leaders, who will be sharing their secrets on how to achieve academic success at BCIT. If you want to find out more about this event, please visit: bcit.ca/learningcommons/seminars. If you have any questions, you can send an email to eleaningcommons@bcit.ca.
As one of the peer tutors, I definitely would encourage everyone who are struggling with their academics to go to this workshop. You may think that you just have to work harder to get good grade, but think again, working hard is definitely not a tip for academic success, because everyone knows that. For most people, the problem is not that they don’t know they should work hard in order to do better. The real problem that most people are facing is HOW to work hard. How do you find the motivation to work hard? How can you have the willpower to consistently remain focused and not getting tired while you are studying? So come to this study skills workshop to find answers to these problems and get inspired.
I have been in a painting frenzy the last few weeks. Commissions mostly but also a few non-commissioned works which I am planning on posting in my Etsy store. Most of my commissions have been pet and children’s portraits, I’m not the most proud of all of them but as long as they capture the essence of the subject the clients seem to be impressed. Cats seem to be the most fun – but I’ve also started painting miniatures of yummy deserts. I’ve also began regularly updating my art blog – which you can look at here.

This past week I had my first opportunity to read news/sportscasts on-air on Evolution 107.9 FM! Until now – outside of the 1 Burnaby Express game I called – it’s been all practice for the instructors to mark. But not anymore!
The shift entailed putting together and reading a 5 minute newscast at 6:00pm followed by 3 minute sportscasts at 7:05, 8:05, and 9:05 and then a 6 minute sportscast at 10:10.
All in all I deem the night to be a success. Of course, like all types of live broadcasts there were some hiccups. Whether it was the script jumping to the end before I was done reading, not being able to hear the station feed, or my forgetting to put NHL scores in my 8:05 (what?!?!), I still thought it was a success and better yet, I really enjoyed it!
The highlight of my night (like the pun?) was for my 10:10 sportscast. I’ve been told clips make the cast better and I tend to agree. So when I figured that the Oilers-Flyers game was on TSN I had it on in the newsroom to try and record some clips. Too bad for me it was a scoreless game and nothing really exciting happened. That was until the last minute.
I was recording and with 16 seconds left Ryan Putolny scored the game winner for Edmonton. It was a good call and fit with the cast and luckily I recorded it. I played it in my 10:10 and was very happy.
What do you think?
Have a listen.

Well its been a fairly good start to 2010, most notably that I’ve taken up running again and started coaching at the Running Room. I’m coaching the 5km Advanced group and doing some hill repeats, speed work and tempo runs with them. I started off thinking I was going to train for a full marathon but since I’m just coming back from some significant time off with an Achilles injury I think the half is far more doable. The next race coming up is the Making Muscles Move 5K on Valentine’s day…all proceeds go to charity and firefighters are serving chili to all the race participants afterwards. I have also just found out about another exciting opportunity – the Joints in Motion team sponsors runners to attend international marathons provided they raise between $1,000-$2,000 for the Arthritis Society! I’m seriously considering doing that…choices for this year are Nepal, Athens or the Cayman Islands! Stay tuned…more to come in the adventures of this rogue runner…
Well I am in the thick of the second term of my Network Admin BTech program (6th term overall).
Assignments and project deadlines are at every term and mid-terms are shortly a head.
One of the biggest assignments that we are working on is a Linux Firewall.
Now it may not be as exciting at the Harrison Ford movie, but it is very interesting and something I would implement at work and at home.
We are developing a firewall that would be run on a Linux box and essentially lock down the server/client machines behind it, except a few services.
The first assignment was to make a firewall that ran on the server machine itself, but the second assignment was to make a separate Linux firewall machine.
Have you noticed that recently the city is full of Olympic spirits? Most of the ads in skytrain stations, on TV, on bus, and banners hanging on the side of the street lamp are about Olympics. Only two weeks left before the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic officially begin. So in addition to watch those Olympics ads, is there anything else you can do to immerge yourself into the spirit of Olympics? Of course, there are will be lots of free events going on before and during the Olympics. For instance, you can go skating on the outdoor skating rink at Robson Square, which just has been opened after renovation, so bring your skates to Robson Square and enjoy. If you don’t have your own skates, you can rent skates for $3. There will also be free concerts hold around the Great Vancouver before and during he Olympics. Check out the following link to see various events that are going on now: http://www.vancouver2010.com/more-2010-information/cultural-festivals-and-events/event-listings/.
Although Olympics is hold every 4 years, but holding this game at our home town may be an once in a life time opportunity, so definitely don’t miss out!
They tasted better than the real thing. English muffins, cookie cutter, cheese and ketchup. Presto!

Home made egg McMuffins. Soooooo good. Good way to start the weekend.
There are those weeks when you feel really good at school and then there are the other weeks. This past week was one of those other weeks. I seemed to wake up every morning quite tired and frustrated and it felt like things were just stacked up against me. I find during those weeks you have to find a way to release or forget. So I did.
The way I chose to relax was watching lots of hockey and my current favourite show: Battlestar Galactica.
With the Olympics just around the corner there are a lot of hockey games being played (in the NHL) because of the compressed schedule. And because I’m working at the hockey games during the Olympics and will be interviewing the players (see here for more info) I found that relaxing by watching hockey would also be educational! Good excuse, right?
Battlestar Galactica was another way for me to relax because – if you have seen the show – you literally leave this planet and forget about your life for a little bit. There are four seasons to the show and my girlfriend and I started watching in the summer and just started season four this past week. Not only does the content allow you to relax, but spending time with my girlfriend during the week is a good refresher as well.
Hopefully next week will be better! It has to be because it’s my last week of classes before my three week break for the Olympics. I start my Olympic craziness on February 7th with venue training at Canada Hockey Place! I’m hoping to document my Olympic journey some way or another. Stay tuned.

Cooking Mama's fun, but maybe not the best culinary direction.
Cooking is by far one of the best assets you’ll ever acquire (or maybe the one you will never get a hang of) and it’s always best to learn first hand as opposed to video games. Even if you have the knack to burn water, the Food Technology program welcomes you to join a few classes with them to get you started with a mini-course on how to cook quick healthy meals (and hopefully not destroy the lab in the process).
Their first class was January 26 (yesterday) and there are classes scheduled throughout the term.
Did I mention it’s free?
Well, you weren’t the only one. For some reason unknown, today just seemed like a day where everyone was better off staying home.
And apparently for good reason.
Interestingly enough, last week was the UK’s Blue Monday – the most depressing day of the year when statistically, all of your New Year’s resolutions have been broken and you’ll be receiving the largest credit card bill of the year (remember that computer you splurged on for Christmas?).
But I suppose like everything this school year, everything is arriving a week later than scheduled.
And if you’re not feeling it, check out RainyMood.com to bring the rainstorm ambience indoors.
Happy Blue Monday?
