Part-time Certificate 6160cert

Imagine Your Career in Interior Design

The Program

The Certificate program in the Interior Design department is designed as a foundation year for all of the Interior Design programs. The Certificate focuses on the basics of residential design encompassing design theory, concept development, space planning, lighting, colour, history, materials & fabrics, millwork detailing, sustainability, written communication skills, and visual communication through both freehand and computer generated drawings.

Upon completion of the Certificate in Interior Design, students wishing to proceed to the Diploma in Interior Design and Bachelor of Interior Design must complete 6.0 credits of General Education electives prior to admission into the Diploma program. Students wishing to proceed to the Associate Certificate in Kitchen and Bath Design and the Diploma in Residential Interiors can do so directly after completion of the certificate.

A fast-track schedule has been set up for those students who want to complete the Certificate in 12 months (this fast-track program is only offered for students starting the program in September). Students are responsible for checking the prerequisites for each course before registering. To maximize the program’s flexibility, courses are offered during the day, evenings and on weekends, in the fall, winter and spring/summer terms.

If you do not wish to follow the "Fast-Track" layout below and need help with a modified schedule, please contact the Program Assistant.

Graduating & Jobs

For those individuals seeking employment after completion of the Certificate program, employment may be found in the field of Interior Design as manufacturer’s representatives in wholesale resource firms and as consultants in retail design showrooms.

Graduate employment outcomes

The BCIT student outcomes reports present summary findings from the annual survey of former students administered by BC Stats one to two years after graduation. These reports combine the last three years of available results for the 2013-2015 BCIT Outcomes Surveys of 2012-2014 graduates and for Degree 2010-2012 graduates. The reports are organized into three-page summaries containing information on graduates' labour market experiences and opinions regarding their education. More detailed information can be accessed at the BC Student Outcomes website.

To view these results, you may need to have the Adobe Acrobat Reader installed in your Web browser.

Apply for graduation

Upon successful completion of all program requirements, complete an Application for BCIT Credential [PDF] and submit it to Student Information and Enrolment Services.

Allow approximately six to eight weeks for processing.

All financial obligations to the Institute must be met prior to issuance of any credential.
