This course introduces the student to the installation, testing and maintenance of Fibre Optic communications systems. The theory portion of the course covers the basic concepts of light theory, optical glass, connector and splicing requirements, cable construction, handling and installation procedures. Practical aspects of test equipment theory are covered as well. The practical portion of the course covers the techniques used in assembling fibre optic connectors, splicing optical fibres and testing a fibre optic link.
This course will be delivered in a BLENDED format, as a combination of online and on-campus learning, on a schedule that will be announced on the first day of class. Note: BCIT reserves the right to cancel courses. In the event of a part-time studies course cancellation, you will be notified at least two business days prior to the course start. Characterize the transmission of light within an optical fibre
Describe the construction of an optical fibre
Identify and analyze light propagation impairments found on an optical fibre
Describe the components of fibre optic cable
Categorize the functions of each class of fibre optic cable
Discuss fibre optic cable installation
Select and install connectors on fibre optic cable
Perform fusion splices on a fibre optic cable
Test and evaluate a fibre optic link
