RENR 8110 - Lake Restoration & Applied Limnology

Renewable Resources Part-time Studies Course

School of Construction and the Environment

To support you and your education, BCIT is adapting applied learning in formats appropriate to the unfolding global situation. All PTS classes are being delivered in an online format unless you are notified otherwise.

Course Details

This course examines physical, chemical and biological processes that influence living organisms in inland waters. Both theoretical and applied aspects of limnology will be covered and their relationship to restoring degraded lake systems. A significant part of the course will be based on field exercises and assignments covering the applied aspects of lake limnology. Lecture material will emphasize the theoretical aspects of limnology, lake systems, and their application to restoration of degraded lake systems.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Through lecture components:
    • Contrast various lake formation processes and classify lake types.
    • Interpret the physical chemistry of lakes.
    • Outline lake stratification processes and how water moves.
    • Design sampling protocols for quantitative and qualitative measures of: lake chemistry, lake flora and fauna, hydrology and ground water processes, vertical profiles, thermal stratification.
    • Contrast the above characteristics for assessment of the health of a lake system.
    • Interpret key characteristics and processes of lakes: eutrophication, energy flows, acid rain, climate change, paleolimnology, lake sedimentation, littoral zones, trophic cascade, etc.
    • Design and evaluate restoration processes to ameliorate degraded lake systems.
  • Through the lab components:
    • Design and interpret morphometric measurements.
    • Analyze time-depth plots, O2 depletion rates, phosphorus loads, etc.
    • Conduct and analyze additional quantitative measures of lake systems (e.g., conductivity, salinity, pH, temperature, flow rates, turbidity).
    • Conduct sampling and analyze aquatic macrophytes (bacteria, zooplankton, phytoplankton, etc.).
    • Demonstrate strong skills in conducting all levels of quantitative limnology.

Effective as of Winter 2013
