This course covers basic principles of chemistry. The major topics are atomic structure, nomenclature, stoichiometry, redox reactions, and electrochemistry. Additional material includes chemical bonding, solutions, neutralization and solubility of compounds. The importance of precipitation reactions for the treatment of water and wastewater will also be examined.
Acceptance into the Ecological Restoration degree program or by departmental approval.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
Describe atomic structure, main features of subatomic particles, and the importance of isotopes.
Describe the general location of metals, metalloids, and nonmetals in the periodic table, and their main characteristics.
Explain the difference between ionic bond and covalent bond.
Identify ions, ionic compounds, molecular compounds, and correctly derive their names and formula.
Calculate the number of moles of a compound from its mass.
Derive molar ratios and use them to solve problems involving mass-volume or mass-mass relationships.
Determine the limiting reactant and calculate actual and percent yield.
Assign oxidation numbers to identify the oxidizing and reducing agent in a redox reaction.
Calculate the cell potential under standard and non-standard conditions.
Describe kinds of intermolecular forces and their influence on the solubility of compounds.
Solve problems relating concentrations of solutions.
Describe the characteristics of strong and weak acids and bases, and the role of buffer solutions.
Calculate the pH and pOH of a solution.
Solve problems involving acid-base titrations.
Predict the formation of a precipitate.
Carry on calculations to determine alkalinity and water hardness.
Describe the chemical reactions involved in the precipitation of hardness ions, phosphate ions, and iron ions from water.
