This course will give those working in the railway industry (mainly conductors, locomotive engineers, yard supervisors) an overview of the responsibilities and procedures for performing tests on freight air brake equipment. It reviews pre-departure and en-route tests required in accordance with regulations.
Railroaders working with railcars, locomotives, railcar movers with air brakes.
High visibility vest, work gloves, safety glasses, and CSA approved footwear required. Footwear must be green equilateral triangle, steel-toed, lace-up, ankle covering boots with a defined heel of minimum 9 mm (3/8 inch) and maximum 25 mm (1 inch). Prerequisite: Railroaders working with railcars, locomotives, railcar movers with air brakes. This course is held at BCIT Annacis Island Campus.
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
Explain the operation of freight cars air brakes systems and tests.
Describe the procedures for inspecting freight air brake systems for movements and equipment, according to the Canadian Railway Operating Rules (CROR), General Operating Instructions (GOI), and special instructions, where required.
Describe the various air brake tests according to CROR, GOI, and special instructions.
Perform various air brakes tests in the yard.
