Course Details

Covers the knowledge required in the operation, maintenance and installation of valves, actuators and gates used in water distribution, wastewater collection and treatment systems. Various actuators (electric, air and hydraulic) control systems are discussed including communication protocol to SCADA and other operating systems. Topics include routine maintenance of all pilot-operated control valves and all automated valves and gates. Valve sizing, selection and governing standards will be discussed.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Identify various valves used in the municipal system and safely operate said valves either manually or using remote control systems.
  • Safely service and maintain valves, set open and closed position limits and torques switches on automated valves.
  • Select and size appropriate valves for service conditions either for manual or remote control operation.
  • Properly install, adjust and leak-test gates and valves in accordance with applicable standards.
