Course Details

This course is equivalent to PEMAC Maintenance Management Module 6: Maintenance Work Management. Planning, scheduling and work coordination form the foundation to the maintenance department's ability to add value to the goods and/or services of its employer and customers. Effective planning and scheduling ensure that the right things are done at the right time using the right resources and the right tools in an effort to enhance process reliability while minimizing interruptions to production processes and/or services. This module provides a study of the fundamental principles of the planning and scheduling process in addition to the basics of planning, scheduling and work coordination methods. Upon completion of this module, participants will have a sound understanding of planning and scheduling tools and how to apply them to effectively transition from reactive to proactive maintenance and physical asset management. Key learning elements include effective use of resources, aligning maintenance activities with production or service schedules, developing and documenting maintenance strategies and integrating proactive maintenance tactics.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Describe the benefits associated with planning, scheduling and work coordination.
  • Define the skills and specific areas of knowledge required for various types and levels of planning and scheduling.
  • Describe how to develop standardized planning and scheduling procedures.
  • Decide what work needs to be planned and scheduled and how to prioritize it.
  • Describe how planning and scheduling tasks relate to Project Management, and Project Management tools such as software packages, Work Breakdown Structure and Critical Path Methods.
  • Describe the impact of constraints on the planning and scheduling functions.
  • Describe the benefits of using CMMS software to integrate maintenance planning, scheduling and coordination.
  • List and describe the 12 steps involved in implementing systems for planning, scheduling and coordination.
  • Align maintenance activities with production or service schedules.
  • Develop and document maintenance strategies.
  • Integrate proactive maintenance tactics.
