Course Details

This course introduces the fundamentals of project management. It covers the unique characteristics of projects and fundamentals of project planning such as WBS, Gantt charts, CPM, dealing with people and team issues, maintenance and control of projects, using check points and milestones, communication, and common sources of difficulty in project management. The course emphasizes Statistical Process Control techniques as a method for tracking improvements. The focus is on the food industry.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

  • Explain the concepts of project planning and organization, budgeting and control, and project life cycles.
  • Explain concepts related to organizational workflow including the staffing process, project planning elements, and the project plan contents and project communications.
  • Apply several basic project scheduling techniques including WBS, CPM, PERT, GANTT CHARTS, and resource constrained scheduling.
  • Prepare a risk assessment and mitigation strategy.
  • Track improvement by using techniques such as Statistical Process Control method.
  • Measure the performance of project from a cost-effective perspective.
  • Deal with conflict resolution, and issues related to leadership and task management in a project environment.
  • Use Microsoft Project in performing simple project management task.
