Course Details

Introduces quality assurance for manufacturing and service industries. The course presents a general overview of quality management topics: establishing desired product and/or service quality and reliability and the conditions necessary to achieve them; quality planning; standards for quality management systems; economic factors; quality assurance and production; inspection and test operations; total quality control concepts. Class activities include videos, group discussions and in-class group exercises.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Define quality for products/services in terms of customer and supplier needs.
  • Describe the basic concepts within Quality Management Systems, including the ISO 9000 series standards.
  • Appreciate the planning and work elements for a typical Quality Assurance (QA) system.
  • Differentiate between different inspection types.
  • Describe the four types of quality costs and their trends.
  • Explain the principles of Total Quality Management (TQM) and its implementation.
  • Understand the various QA tools used to improve service and production quality.
  • Conduct applied research in the field of Quality.
