Course Details

This course provides work experience for a student who has successfully completed all other requirements of the BCIT Medical Office Assistant program. It includes six hours of classroom time, an eighty hour work placement, and a final presentation. The practicum must be pre-approved by the instructor for work experience in a physician’s office, clinic, hospital department, or related health-care facility. The work placement allows for communication with patients, physicians, and other members of the heath care team, thus providing a foundation for specific job skills and an opportunity to apply MOA skills and concepts in the workplace.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate critical thinking in a medical environment.
  • Apply clinical skills, computer skills, filing skills, telephone skills and assertive communication skills in a functioning health-care facility.
  • Maintain patient files accurately both electronically and paper based.
  • Schedule appointments accurately.
  • Assist patients and answer patient questions in a professional manner.
  • Demonstrate the appropriate use of billing procedures with medical agencies.
  • Apply medical office workflow procedures.
  • Demonstrate professional interview techniques.
  • Write a targeted resume for the medical industry ready to distribute in pdf format.
