Office Skills Training Part-time Studies Course

Course Details

This course will prepare the student with the basic knowledge needed in medical office administration and procedures and professional conduct. Students will develop skills in appointment scheduling, reception and communication skills filing, referrals, and pharmacology. There will be discussions related to patient rights and the allied professionals who are utilized within the medical field. A variety of medical abbreviations and an introduction to the use of the B.C. Medical Directory will also be presented. Various office scenarios will be presented and problem solving techniques will be taught so that students will feel confident when dealing with patient concerns related to their MOA duties.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate and identify effective communication and reception skills.
  • Perform appointment-scheduling skills efficiently and coordinate work according to time management skills learned
  • Recognize drug classifications and the names of some commonly used medications
  • Document accurately and maintain medical records
  • Establish competency in filing and chart preparation
  • Integrate medical ethics into the workplace
  • Identify commonly used abbreviations in the medical field
  • Recognize the proper steps taken when performing patient referrals to Specialists
  • Develop office management skills
  • Apply the above-learned skills and knowledge to effectively help with problem solving as it relates to the medical office assistant and medical administration
