Occupational Health and Safety Part-time Studies Course

BCIT is planning for a substantial return to on-campus activity for the fall 2021 term as informed by BC Public Health Officer guidelines. Refer to each course listing for details.

Course Details

This one-week laboratory session provides hands-on training in the calibration and use of occupational hygiene equipment. The small class size ensures that all students can participate in practical exercises with the equipment. Conducts hygiene monitoring on the BCIT campus in Burnaby, BC.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • discuss the legal and professional requirements for calibration of flow rate of any sampling pump and demonstrate the calibration and operation techniques for personal sampling pumps used in air sampling
  • discuss the advantages and limitations of colorimetric detector tube systems and given a manufacturer’s instructions, demonstrate the techniques for use of these systems
  • discuss the principles of sample collection with solid and liquid sorbents and demonstrate the techniques for use of these sampling systems
  • identify and demonstrate the application of selected direct reading instruments such as photo- and flame-ionization detectors, infrared spectrophotometers and electrochemical sensor-based gas detectors and discuss the concept of integrated sampling
  • given direction provided in standard methods demonstrate the calibration and sampling setups for specified particulate sampling systems
  • identify and demonstrate techniques used for dermal and surface sampling of chemical contaminants
  • identify and show expertise in providing guidance in the selection of respirators for prevention of exposure to chemical and biological agents
  • demonstrate the acoustical calibration of sound level meters and noise dosimeters
  • demonstrate basic noise measurements techniques as required by OHS regulations and standards
  • identify and show expertise in providing guidance in the selection of hearing protectors
  • discuss current OHS regulations regarding worker exposure to temperature extremes
  • demonstrate the use of a heat stress monitor for determination of WBGT and instrumentation for the evaluation of Equivalent Chill Temperature
  • identify instrumentation used in area and personal monitoring of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation exposure
  • identify and operate instruments used in the evaluation of hand-arm and whole-body vibration and explain the use of current occupational exposure limits for HAV and WBV
  • identify and demonstrate the use of instruments currently used for the measurement of bioaerosol levels
  • demonstrate the use of anemometers and smoke systems for the evaluation of operation of ventilation systems
  • discuss lighting requirements in current OHS regulations and demonstrate the use of basic and advanced photometers to perform basic lighting system evaluations
