Course Details

Introduces the concepts of how accidents/incidents are caused and provides evidence to support the analysis and investigation of these causes. Analyzes a variety of sources, from historical perspectives to current behavioural theories, for their application to today's workplaces. Discusses accident investigation techniques and their legal implications. Students conduct a real or mock accident investigation as part of their course requirements.

  2. This is an *** ONLINE *** Distance Education course. Internet access is required. To be successful, plan to spend 8-12 hours per week on your studies, starting Week 1. Ensure you have an active e-mail address on file with BCIT so you don't miss this important e-mail. COURSE MATERIAL / BOOKSTORE: NO print course materials are required from the Bookstore for this ONLINE course. ACCESS: Available the morning of April 8 (the first day of the term). Login via The Learning Hub at: https://learn.bcit.ca. SPONSORED STUDENTS: Information is available on the BCIT website. For course registration: https://www.bcit.ca/admission/fees/sponsorship.shtml. This “Proposed Program” will assist both sponsor and sponsored student with overall course planning and costs. Contact with the Program Head should be made at least 4 weeks prior to term start. This is a one-time option to extend for another 12-week term at a reduced tuition fee. Course work submitted in the Winter Term will be retained; you are ONLY required to submit outstanding course work. Tutor support available by e-mail (or by phone, if pre-arranged). Learning Outcomes

After successfully completing this course, you will have sufficient information to:

  • Describe the management principles involved in a total loss prevention program.
  • Conduct various accident/incident investigations to determine the root causes and recommend corrective measures.
  • Describe several common causes of accidents.
  • Develop several approaches to promote safety and behavioural change in the workplace.
  • Conduct an effective interview of witnesses in an accident/incident investigation.
  • Complete a comprehensive accident/incident report.
