NSPO 7430 - Perioperative Theory 3: The Nurse in the Scrub Role (Modified)

Nursing Specialty Perioperative Part-time Studies Course

School of Health Sciences

Course Details

This course provides theory related to perioperative nursing practice primarily in the scrub nurse role. The focus of study is the intraoperative period for childbearing individuals undergoing cesarean birth procedures. Students learn about the key concepts of caring, clinical decision-making, safety, aseptic technique, and surgical conscience, and how these concepts are used to maintain a safe, supportive, perioperative environment. Clinical decision-making frameworks that guide practice in the scrub role are introduced and reviewed. Learners consider how standards and competencies inform perioperative patient care in the scrub nurse role. Learners build on nursing knowledge of anatomy and physiology in order to integrate this information with learning related to perioperative nursing care in the scrub role. Learners examine ways of developing collaborative relationships with individuals, colleagues, instructors, and members of the surgical team.
