Nursing Specialty Occupational Health Part-time Studies Course

Course Details

This clinical course will focus on assessing work environments, analyzing jobs, and making recommendations to improve the health and safety of the workplace. The course provides the nurse with opportunities to build on communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and systematic inquiry skills related to the role of the occupational health nurse. This course uses a distance delivery format. Students will complete the readings, course assignments and schedule site visits in consultation with their tutor. Students have 12 weeks to complete all course requirements.

Learning Outcomes

As licensed health care practitioners, all learners will practice in accordance with professional standards of practice throughout the course. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Assess and analyze the work environment using the principles of occupational health nursing, industrial hygiene and safety.
  • Identify appropriate industrial hygiene sampling methods.
  • Make appropriate recommendations based on the workplace assessment.
  • Demonstrate their ability to develop a health protection program in response to an assessed occupational health hazard.
  • Evaluation their own current level of competency with regards to the Key Areas of Practice for Occupational Health Nursing, and their learning and grown in the clinical experience.
