Nursing Specialty Occupational Health Part-time Studies Course

Course Details

This course presents theory related to potential hazards found in various work settings. It focuses on the industrial hygiene principles and practices of anticipating, recognizing, and evaluating biological, chemical, and physical hazards. The course emphasizes a collaborative approach to eliminating or controlling these hazards, whether the occupational health nurse is a member of a team of one or more Occupational Health and Safety practitioners or is the only on-site practitioner with knowledge and skills in industrial hygiene.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Select appropriate evaluation methods for specific hazards in the workplace.
  • Apply model of Recognition — Evaluation — Control in recommendations for an effective occupational health and safety program.
  • Demonstrate a problem-solving approach in the evaluation of biological hazards in the work environment, including medical evaluation and inspection for presumptive sources and high risk work practices.
  • Apply principles of due diligence in the assessment and control of occupational health and safety hazards.
