Course Details

This course is one of a series intended for individuals preparing to assume the responsibilities of Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) or RSO Assistant in a health care, laboratory or educational facility utilizing radioactive materials. Course modules are designed to enable students to fulfil Canadian Radiation Protection Association core level competencies pertaining to program administration, employee qualifications and performance, inspections, audits and investigations. Students will explore, interpret and apply Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission regulations to create components of a customized radiation safety program relating to administrative responsibilities. Assignments involve scenario-based exercises suitable for application in a working environment or a simulated setting.


Diploma of Technology in Nuclear Medicine or equivalent or prior knowledge of radiation physics and experience handling radioactive materials.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:

  • Interpret and apply Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission acts and regulations to create the administrative components of a customized radiation safety program.
  • Administer a safety program that provides effective control of radiation protection activities in accordance with Federal and Provincial regulations.
  • Discern the requirements for a license.
  • Differentiate between license types and applications.
  • Negotiate the mechanisms to apply for a license.
  • Ensure best practices that reflect safe use of radioactive material, concern for public safety and adherence to ALARA principles.
  • Establish a system to document, recover and readily access information regarding the use of radioactive materials.
  • Assess, advance and promote the radiation safety skills of employees.
  • Perform radiation safety inspections, safety audits and investigations.
