Course Details
Through online readings, activities, interactions and instructor support, this course focuses on patient care, safety and professional practice as it relates to magnetic resonance imaging. This course focuses on professional practices, patient management/care and MRI safety. Techniques and tools are covered to provide the technologist the knowledge to perform duties that are common to all MRI procedures. Emphasis is placed on safe management of the patient in the MR environment. This course is taken before your MRI practicum and is a course that is required for the certificate in MRI. It is also an elective course for the Bachelor of Technology Degree in Medical Imaging, granted by the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT).

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
Describe professional behaviors of an MRI technologist and an understanding of the current and emerging issues in the Canadian Healthcare System.
Demonstrate an understanding of critical thinking and problem solving strategies to ensure best practices.
Apply the principles and techniques used to ensure patient comfort, care and safety; including patient monitoring in an MRI environment.
Outline the techniques and strategies to use for the management of the patient before, during and after the MR procedure.
Describe communication strategies that will result in effective interaction between the technologist and the patient.
Identify the different types of MR contrast media, and provide information on dosage, administration, contraindications, adverse reactions, clinical applications and emergency procedures.
Compare and contrast MRI Safety policies for various institutions (hospital, outpatient facility, Children’s hospital and research facility) to ensure the safety of patients, visitors and staff members.
Identify the purposes of comprehensive MRI screening and evaluate proper procedures.
Describe MRI facility design to support MR Safety and identify the 4 Safety Zones and the level of personnel in each area.
Demonstrate an understanding and implement infection control practices.
Describe proper body mechanics to be used in the transfer of patients in the MRI environment.
