This is a preparatory course for students to write the Transport Canada Engineering Knowledge “Motor” examination paper towards their Transport Canada 1st Class “Motor” Certificate of Competency. All topics covered in this course are listed in TP 2293E under 26.9 – ENGINEERING KNOWLEDGE OF MOTOR VESSELS (EXAMINATION CODE: 1EKM), and these are: Operating principles, construction, manufacturing processes, and shipboard installation details of marine diesel engines, including differences between various engine types; The properties, operation, and maintenance of the main engine fuel and lubricating oil, different types of scavenging air systems, main engine cooling systems; The construction and maintenance of air compressors; The operating and maintenance of starting and reversing systems; Engine component failures and remedies; Machinery management through planned maintenance, identifying engine defects, and their remedies; Operation and maintenance of power transmission systems, auxiliary boilers, and associated machinery; The operation of automatic control devices used in engine systems.
