MECH 3355 - Fluid Power 1
Part-time Studies Course
Introduces pneumatic and hydraulic power transmission systems, and their mechanical and electrical controls. Fluid power components, their symbols, function, and construction are examined, and used in the design and testing of related control circuits. Covers sizing calculations, maintenance, and troubleshooting of components and circuits.

Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:
Discuss safety and environmental concerns in hydraulics and pneumatics.
Describe the structure and identify basic components of typical fluid power transmission system.
Describe the sources and conditioning of compressed air.
Discuss the operating principles of basic pneumatic and hydraulic components.
Describe the operation and methods of control of flow, pressure, and directional pneumatic and hydraulic valves.
Discuss the benefits and limitations of fluid power applications in industrial and mobile systems.
Describe the characteristics of hydraulic fluids.
Discuss and select pneumatic and hydraulic seals.
Interpret and use fluid power schematic symbols.
Calculate pressure and flow requirements in simple fluid power circuits.
Calculate energy losses in fluid power circuits.
Select pneumatic and hydraulic conductors (pipes) using standard components.
Select pneumatic and hydraulic cylinders for given applications.
Select electrical control components for typical fluid power circuits.
