Course Details

This online course explores the critical aspects of engaging and leading health professionals, service providers, contractors and teams in the health sector in Western Canada. This course covers two key areas, Human Resources and Labour Relations. Because the appropriate deployment of health professional and service providers is an essential leadership capability, the course reviews key Human Resources concepts. The course examines labour agreements and provides opportunities to apply leadership theories and practices throughout the course. *This course will be offered once each year in the spring term as per the annual course schedule.*

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Integrate the distributed leadership applications of the LEADS Frameworks with the domains of human resources and labour relations issues in the Canadian health system.
  • Apply LEADS Framework to the leadership of health professionals, service providers and contractors who are engaged in health systems across Western Canada.
  • Differentiate organizational challenges and strategies related to human resource policy and regulations.
  • Differentiate organizational challenges and strategy related to complex labor relations policy and regulations.
  • Apply leadership skills to employee recruitment, on boarding and employee engagement.
  • Apply the leadership skills needed for using the collective agreements as the bridge that links the employees and the organizational leaders into a common base of understanding.
  • Participate as an engaged leader in health sector job design, selection processes, performance improvement and need discipline of employees.
  • Participate as an engaged leader in handling conflict appropriately and constructively and providing leadership when differences of opinion arise.
  • Analyze the Full Time Equivalents needs for the work required within the existing resources available.
  • Assess complex labor relations of the health care setting in the context of labour agreements.
  • Propose strategies to lead members of the health care team in complex and stressful environments.
  • Initiate appropriate professional judgment in the applicable health care settings related to dispute resolution, grievance handling and labor negotiation.
  • Utilize professional judgment in identifying, documenting and communicating issues in leadership situations.
