Course Details

This course covers firearms and ammunition, serial number restoration, physical matching and comparison, range determination, gunshot wounds and exhibit handling. Emphasis is placed on firearm and tool mark identification to increase understanding of the uniqueness of tool marks as an aid in investigating and solving crimes.

Prerequisite(s)

Admission to a Forensic credential program or permission of the Program Coordinator.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:

  • Explain the general theory of the operation of firearms.
  • Demonstrate the importance of evidence preservation and submission in forensic investigation of firearms and toolmarks.
  • Explain the principle of serial number restoration.
  • Prepare tests for comparison with unknown exhibit samples and explain the principle of tool mark generation.
  • Describe factors that make a tool mark unique.
  • Differentiate between class and accidental characteristics and explain the role each plays in the identification of tool marks and fired ammunition components.
  • Explain the theory of firearm identification.
