Course Details

Introduces electronic sensors and controllers for industrial pneumatic systems. Typical proximity sensors and programmable logic controllers (PLC) are used to control and automate pneumatic circuits with electro-pneumatic and servo/proportional pneumatic valves. Examples of applications are examined and control circuits are developed, constructed and commissioned in practical exercises.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

  • Discuss the safety considerations for typical automated industrial pneumatic systems.
  • Describe typical electronic sensors that are used in industrial pneumatic systems.
  • Select an appropriate controller for pneumatic systems by considering pneumatic only, hard-wired electrical, and electronic programmable methods.
  • Describe basic operation of a PLC and its uses in industrial control of machines and processes.
  • Program a PLC to control industrial pneumatic systems using sequencing, timers, and counters.
  • Describe the operating principles of pneumatic servo/proportional valves.
  • Develop, test, and troubleshoot selected pneumatic circuits with PLCs, solenoid valves, and servo/proportional valves.
