Course Details
The focus of this course is on introducing students to three-phase circuits and electrical equipment found in industry. This course builds on circuit analysis from previous courses and gives students the required background for future courses in advanced power system analysis. Topics include: three-phase power analysis, power factor, power quality, line losses, abnormal conditions, protective devices, magnetic circuit fundamentals, transformer operation and analysis, motor operation and analysis, electrical controls (switches and relays), documentation methods and standards for power and control systems such as one-line and ladder diagrams.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
Identify safety hazards and demonstrate safe work practices when working with voltage above 50 V as per WorkSafe BC regulations.
Analyze single-phase and three-phase circuit configurations.
Measure three-phase power using standard methods, including the 2 watt-meter method.
Analyze and improve power factor in a three-phase electric circuit.
Summarize power quality issues in electric circuits including true RMS.
Calculate per-unit values for an electrical system.
Discuss operating principles and characteristics of protective devices in electric circuits.
Analyze the properties of magnetic materials and magnetic circuits used in electrical equipment.
Analyze operation of single-phase and three-phase power transformers and examine their characteristics.
Analyze operation of three-phase AC induction motors and examine their characteristics.
Analyze operation of DC motors and examine their characteristics.
Analyze stepper motor operation.
Design and implement basic motor control circuits including interlocking.
