Course Details

This course will introduce risk assessment methods with respect to contaminated sites, including principles of problem formulation, exposure assessment, and risk characterization. Specific risk assessment techniques will be presented including EPA environmental risk assessment (ERA) procedures. The methods of risk management and implementation will be discussed. Emphasis will be placed on ecological and human health risk assessment and management of contaminated sites.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Integrate risk assessment as part of the risk management process based on EPA, ERA, and BC MoE ecological assessment practices.
  • Apply environmental risk assessment principles towards problem formulation, toxicity assessment, exposure assessment, and risk characterization.
  • Compare human health risk assessment with ecological risk assessment.
  • Select appropriate risk assessment method for conducting a contaminated site ERA.
  • Advocate for the benefits of systematic environmental/human health risk management, taking into consideration the associated environmental, social, and financial implications.
  • Evaluate the impact of risk management strategies on business and government agencies in the context of corporate policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Use common risk communication tools to inform the public about risk management issues.
  • Develop and present materials for a mock public open house to manage a given risk situation.
  • Examine risk management options: prevention, emergency response, insurance, and storage.
  • Prepare a detailed risk management strategy paper.
