EENG 8226 - Thermal Energy Systems

Environmental Engineering Part-time Studies Course

School of Construction and the Environment

Course Details

This course covers a variety of renewable resources available for production of thermal energy. Geothermal technology which relies on the thermal energy stored in the earth's crust, biomass technology which considers available organic material, and waste-to-energy technology are the main focus of the course. Characterization of resource types, size, distribution, chemical and physical properties relevant to energy production, thermal conversion, as well as sustainability attributes will be discussed for each technology.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Analyze regional and global biomass and geothermal resources within the context of resource size and distribution assessing the barriers to their utilization.
  • Discuss the types of organic waste including municipal solid waste which could be effectively utilized for energy production.
  • Analyze advantages and disadvantages, costs and benefits of thermal energy systems.
  • Formulate opportunities for the growth in geothermal and biomass power capacity.
  • Outline sustainability attributes of biomass, geothermal and waste-to-energy technologies and any environmental/ecological impacts associated with their utilization.

Effective as of Fall 2009
