Environmental Engineering Part-time Studies Course

School of Construction and the Environment

Course Details

The first section of this course covers the applicable sections of the Forest Practices Code Act and the Forest Road Regulation. Engineering Guidelines will be discussed. Other topics will include preliminary road location surveys and terrain stability assessments with emphasis on minimization of environmental risks. Various construction techniques will be presented along with the basic elements of drainage design. The second section of this course will cover the applicable sections of the Forest Practices Code Act and the Forest Road Regulation. Road maintenance and upgrade during harvesting operations will be discussed, as well as deactivation after harvesting operations and silvicultural commitments have expired. Other topics include: field assessment procedures, mapping, and the development of appropriate prescriptions. A field trip is included.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Interpret the requirements of the Forest Road Regulation to determine the basic elements of road planning, location, design, construction, and maintenance.
  • Prepare appropriate plans for timber access.
  • Map the data obtained from a preliminary route reconnaissance and a P-line survey.
  • Select the optimum road location based on the suitability of road construction techniques and their associated costs.
  • Demonstrate the importance of adequate road drainage design highlighting the importance of the subtle factors that can cause major slides.
  • Perform calculations to select the correct sized culvert.
  • Interpret the requirements of the Forest Road Regulation to incorporate them in road construction design and rehabilitation.
  • Relate the importance of terrain stability assessment with forestry operations.
  • Carry out a road deactivation survey or physical deactivation operations.
  • Analyze road inventory and assessment data.
  • Map road inventory data.
  • Prepare appropriate prescriptions for road maintenance and rehabilitation.
