COMP 4669 - Advanced Web Applications with PHP

Computer Systems Part-time Studies Course

Course Details

This hands on course continues on from COMP 3015 – Introduction to Web Applications with PHP. Students focus on Object Oriented Programming (OOP) with PHP to develop complex commercial quality web applications. Starting with the PHP in the command line interface (CLI), labs and exercises use open source libraries and integrate with application frameworks and for safely persisting passwords. The model-view-controller (MVC) pattern, the most popular pattern for advanced web applications currently in use is introduced.. Application Program Interface (API) services, OAuth open standard for consumer implementations and Cross Origin Resource Sharing (CORS) is discussed and used in assignments. JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) middle-ware is also introduced to see how front end applications communicate with back end applications. A bonus project is also available for those students who wish to work with ReactJS in a front end framework built in JavaScript. COMP 4669 is an elective Applied Web Development (AWD) and the CST/PTS Diploma. It is also required in the Web and Mobile Application Development (WMA) Associate Certificate. Upon successful completion students will learn to power a front-end Single-page-application (SPA) by creating a back-end PHP service to create an advanced web application. COMP 4669 will only be offered in the winter (January) term.

  • Interact with MySQL via PHP objects and query builders.
  • Write back end MVC web applications.

  • Explain the use of JSON to power a front end applications.
  • Discuss security issues and write secure, robust code resistant to errors and attacks.
  • Install a variety of libraries to use powerful resources such as compression, encryption, and password security.
  • Adopt and implement web applications that talk to other webservices through their SDK.
  • Write high-quality and high-performing web applications to industry standards.
