Course Details

Networking Level 4 - Advanced Planning and Design has been replaced by: COMP 3821 Enterprise Network Design with TCP. This new hands-on lab course replaces both COMP 2664 and COMP 3665 and covers the theory, design and implementation of large scale and enterprise size networks. Please see the new course description for details.

This course was retired after the Spring/Summer 2010 term and is no longer offered through BCIT Part-time Studies.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:

  • Understand the concepts behind the networking of computer systems.
  • Be able to evaluate existing network protocols, hardware, and software.
  • Evaluate the merits of all Data Link Layer protocols.
  • Possess the skills required to design and manage a network.
  • Develop strategies for managing a large, enterprise wide Local Area network.
  • Given user requirements, be able to recommend specific LAN and remote connectivity technologies, and be able to defend the recommendation intelligently.
  • Have an in-depth knowledge of Ethernet technologies and implementation of them.
  • Have a general understanding of Token-Ring, FDDI, CDDI, wireless features and be able to address design needs of each technology.
  • Be able to identify all major components within a LAN structure and identify their characteristics.
  • Be familiar with the TCP/IP protocol and how it interacts on a Local Area Network.
