This hands-on, intensive summer course is the Part-time Studies equivalent of COMP 3512 in the CST Diploma. Following on from COMP 2510 and COMP 2526, students must have prior knowledge of C programming plus Object Oriented Programming (OOP) concepts in order to understand this material. Building upon the C programming language, this is a comprehensive introduction to the powerful features that were added to the C in order to create C++. Topics include: Classes, operator overloading, template classes, exception handling, and an introduction to the Standard Template Library (STL). Upon successful completion, participants will be able to write, test and debug C++ programs. They will be able to create software applications with C++ and use this industry standard tool to implement Term 4 projects.

Prerequisite(s)

(Comp 2510 or COMP 2511) and COMP 2526 or equivalent knowledge of the C language plus Object Oriented Programming.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Design & code classes in C++.
  • Use inheritance to capture & reuse common behaviour.
  • Implement some of the common design patterns in C++.
  • Perform input/output in C++
  • Use the string & string stream classes.
  • Use the standard containers.
  • Use the standard algorithms in the Standard Template Library (STL).
  • Explain the different categories of iterators.
  • Use operator overloading.
  • Use & implement class templates & function templates.
  • Explain and use Exception Handling.
  • Test and debug C++ programs.
