COMP 2660 - Wireless Networking Concepts

Course Details

Learn all about wireless communications systems terminology. Understand the technology and concepts common to all wireless communications networks. Identify the hardware and software components of current and planned wireless systems. Students will be able to describe modulation access schemes, bandwidth, spectrum, propagation, and antennas. Topics include: 802.11, 802.15, 802.16, and 3G mobile. This course is a foundation course for higher level wireless classes including COMP 2661.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Firmly grasp the background theory and technologies of modern wireless communications systems.
  • Explain the fundamental principles behind all wireless transmission systems including the nature of spectrum and bandwidth, how it is allocated, and why it is important.
  • Understand different modulation and access schemes and their relative merits in modern systems.
  • Describe first, second, and third generation mobile systems currently in service, and discuss the differences between them.
  • Discuss the current status of international 3G mobile standards and the relative merits of the competing standards.
  • Explain the essential characteristics of IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN standard and the IEEE 802.15 wireless personal area network standard, and be able to describe the relative merits of each.
  • Describe how fixed wireless systems are different from mobile systems and the circumstances in which they are superior to wireline alternatives.
  • Discuss current wireless industry business models and future trends.
