Computer Systems Part-time Studies Course

Course Details

Students with no prior database experience will acquire expert skills to use, create and manage MS Access. This instructor lead, hands-on course provides lectures, lab exercises and assignments that are designed to provide students with applied skills. Students learn best practices to design database systems with the latest version of MS Access. They learn to use MS Access built in wizards to create custom and sophisticated reports, as well as work with basic MS Access macros. Topics include how to generate forms, manipulate and query data, use the layout view and generate advanced queries. By the end of this course, successful participants will understand the MS Access approach to relational database management and be prepared for COMP 2375, Advanced MS Access Development. COMP 2374 will be offered once a year in the winter term.

Prerequisite(s)

COMP 1002 or equivalent knowledge of a Windows PC, and file management.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Understand the principals of normalization to create a functional database.
  • Create a multi-table relational database and define table relationships.
  • Import data from external sources, including Excel, txt and csv files.
  • Maintain and query a database using Access’s Query By Example design window.
  • Maintain and query a database using Access’s Query By Example design window.
  • Create data entry forms using wizards.
  • Effectively use the report generator.
  • Use form tools and create custom forms.
  • Create custom reports.
  • Create advanced queries, including action queries, crosstab queries and parameter queries.
  • Create simple macros to automate tasks.
  • Create a switchboard.
