Course Details

This hands-on module follows on from COMP 1361 or COMP 2010. Students should have a fundamental understanding and knowledge of the basic features and principals of using Word in the current MS Office environment. Students learn to create complex documents, templates and forms using the advanced features in Word. Topics include: using document references to generate a table of contents, index, bibliography; working with Word’s collaborative features - comments, track changes, compare documents; performing a mail merge to personalize correspondence and address envelopes and labels; inserting and customizing building blocks; automating tasks by recording macros; customizing the Word environment. This instructor lead course provides lectures, lab exercises and assignments that are designed to provide experience and practical skills. Participants start at an intermediate level and progress to expert in just 6 lessons and learn how to manage all types of complex Word documents. Only those students who have self studied all the topics in COMP 1361 should register for this advanced level course

COMP 1361 or (COMP 2010 plus self-study of all COMP 1361 topics) or equivalent knowledge.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Add references to documents: table of contents, footnotes / endnotes, citations and bibliography, captions, index and create cross-references.
  • Use Word’s collaborative features: comments, track changes, and compare documents.
  • Use a mail merge to create and personalize form letters, envelopes or mailing labels.
  • Create templates and electronic forms to automate document creation.
  • Record and edit simple macros.
  • Work efficiently in Word using navigation techniques, shortcuts, and building blocks.
