Course Details

COMP 1951 is a special delivery of COMP 1950 designed for the Full-time Mobile App Tools Associate Certificate program. Students in this section must supply their own Mac notebook computer installed with the current OS X system and application software in order to participate. This hands-on course follows on from COMP 1850 Web Development and Design 1. Students who already understand HTML and CSS will explore web development in more depth with new topics and techniques. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the latest technologies including HTML5 and CSS3 for mobile web sites. There is a focus on responsive design and mobile presentation through the use of Media Queries. Adding behavior to web sites using JavaScript frameworks such as jQuery is introduced as well as building dynamic and semantically marked-up content with Search Engine Optimized (SEO) pages. Labs and exercises follow industry standard web development methods. Students will learn to create templates for content management systems for both on desk-tops and mobile devices. Additional topics will include: leveraging Server Side Includes (SSI) for re-usable code, source control for managing code and web-based fonts for professional typography. COMP 1951 may be used in place of COMP 1950 in the BCIT Computing “Applied Web Development” and “Web and Mobile Application Development” associate certificates. By the end of this course successful students will be prepared to move on to COMP 1952 JavaScript for Mobile App Tools and COMP 1953 Android and iOS Mobile App Tools.

COMP 1850 or equivalent knowledge of building web pages and web sites with HTML5, CSS3, plus the ability to use a Mac with the current OS X.
