COMP 1362 - Excel Spreadsheet Fundamentals

Course Details

Learn the fundamental principles of spreadsheets using the MS Excel Ribbon user interface environment with contextual tabs and Quick Access Toolbar. This Instructor lead, hands-on course provides students with the ability to create, edit, format and print spreadsheets. Topics include: entering and editing data, using Excel components and options, modifying worksheets, creating formulas and using functions, charting and sorting and filtering. Students acquire practical skills to be able produce professional looking, well formatted Excel worksheets in only 6-weeks and are prepared to move on to more advanced Excel material. Those who plan to take COMP 2362, Microsoft Excel Advanced in the same term should instead register for the complete 12 week course COMP 2364, Microsoft Excel, which covers both fundamental and advanced topics.

Prerequisite(s)

COMP 1002 or equivalent knowledge of MS Windows and File Management plus Grade 12 Math or Business Math or equivalent.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Identify the new components of the Excel workspace.
  • Ribbon user interface and Quick Access Toolbar.
  • Demonstrate entering, editing, saving and modifying data in a worksheet.
  • Demonstrate formatting and improving the appearance of a worksheet.
  • Apply Relative, Absolute and Mixed cell references.
  • Apply Basic Formulae and Functions.
  • Apply Date and Time Functions.
  • Apply Decision Making Functions.
  • Apply Financial Functions.
  • Demonstrate creating, modifying and formatting charts.
  • Demonstrate the use of sorting, filtering and editing lists.
  • Apply protection to workbooks, worksheets and ranges.
