CIVL 2152 - Land Use Planning

Civil Engineering Part-time Studies Course

Course Details

This course will begin by discussing the role and influence of the four levels of government on land use planning. With primary emphasis on the urban environment, participants will be introduced to the concepts and objectives of community planning and the influence of the many stakeholder groups. Guided by the current legislation, students will be introduced to the processes of changes in land use and subdivision of land. Students will then be provided with a broad overview of the constraints and limitations of the many different aspects of municipal infrastructure needed to support urban development. The course will conclude with an introduction to some of the primary factors that influence development economics.

Learning Outcomes

  • Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  • Provide examples of how the four levels of government can influence land use planning objectives.
  • Explain how municipal governments develop and implement long term community planning objectives.
  • Identify different stakeholder groups at the local level and state their interests in the community planning process.
  • Explain how communities use legislation, policies and guiding principles to create long-term change in the community.
  • Explain how data regarding the physical and demographic aspects of the community are used to help develop different types of plans to guide the overall development of the community.
  • Provide a comparison between urban and rural land development procedures.
  • Provide a comparison between urban and rural land development procedures.
  • Explain how different aspects of the local terrain, climate & development requirements can influence or place constraints on the municipal servicing infrastructure requirements.
  • Identify key stakeholders in the community and explain their influence on development economics.
