Course Details

Provides a practical introduction to common instrumental techniques used in the field of analytical chemistry. Techniques introduced include gas chromatography, high performance liquid chromatography, ion chromatography, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, liquid chromatography-mass spectroscopy, infrared absorption spectroscopy, ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy, atomic absorption spectroscopy. Hands-on laboratory exercises will demonstrate the fundamental principles and some routine applications of these analytical techniques.

introductory organic chemistry course.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Recognise common analytical chemistry instruments.
  • Distinguish chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques.
  • Describe the main principles of the following analytical techniques:
    • Gas chromatography.
    • High performance liquid chromatography.
  • Hybrid chromatographic techniques:
    • Gas chromatography - mass spectrometry (GC-MS)
    • Liguid chromatography -mass spectrometry (LC-MS)
  • Ion Chromatography
  • Atomic Absorption spectroscopy
  • Molecular spectroscopy including:
    • Infrared absorption spectroscopy.
    • Ultraviolet/Visible absorption spectroscopy.
    • Fluorescence spectroscopy.
  • Demonstrate the steps involved in qualitative and quantitative instrumental analysis.
