The course presents an overview of energy audits aimed at identifying opportunities for energy cost and greenhouse gas reduction in existing buildings. Students will gain an understanding on how to procure an energy audit, how to carry out an energy audit, how to evaluate energy audits competed and how to plan for the implementation of the findings. Students will also be able to specify, procure, and review energy audits. In addition, students will perform high-level energy audits.

Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
Outline the potential benefits of conducting energy audits.
Identify the purpose of various energy audit types, including heat energy (heating, ventilation, and refrigeration), electrical energy (lighting and non-lighting).
Outline the energy auditing process.
Analyze building operations for energy use/demand as well as potential energy sources.
Demonstrate an awareness of various measurement techniques and energy auditing tools.
Use the findings of an energy audit to identify and interpret opportunities for energy and energy cost savings, including best practices, appropriate energy-saving technologies, system retrofits, use of renewable energy, and energy conservation behaviour changes among building occupants.
Differentiate between energy savings and energy cost savings.
Analyze the interactive effects between various energy using systems.
Perform a high level energy audit on a real building and real systems.
Summarize at a high level tools available for financial analysis and costing.
Use RETScreen to calculate an energy efficiency analysis.
Outline the BC Safety Authority (BCSA) requirements for working with or close to electricity, natural gas and boilers.
