Introduces participants to new developments in lighting technology and principles of energy efficient lighting. Following an initial review of basic lighting principles current lighting technologies are examined from a technical standpoint. Includes LED, T5 fluorescent, compact fluorescent, High Intensity Discharge (HID) and specialty lamps, electronic ballasts, new developments in luminaire design and lighting control systems. Illumination Engineering Society (IES) introductory lighting course, ED100, or comparable course is recommended as a prerequisite but not mandatory.

Upon successful compleltion of this course, the student will be able to:
Identify the key issues of lighting, including lamp, ballast and luminaire efficacy, rated service live, correlated colour temperature (CCT), and colour rendering ability (Ra).
Explain new developments in lighting technologies, including LED, T5 fluorescent, compact fluorescent, High Intensity Discharge (HID) and specialty lamps, electronic ballasts, luminaire design and lighting control systems.
Critically compare the various lighting technologies, identifying advantages and disadvantages of one technology over another.
Identify applications for specific lighting technologies.
Explain developments in new lighting technologies in recent years.
Identify local manufacturers of new lighting technologies and R&D work presently underway.
