Course Details

This course introduces the relationship between the human eye, the physics of light, the psychology of the brain, and the operation of current television and video systems. Students will study signal paths from camera and lens, through recording methods, measuring and testing equipment, and production equipment, to final display. Through this they will acquire a firm understanding of how a video signal is created, saved, manipulated, and displayed.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:

  • Describe in detail the physics of light and colour.
  • Explain in detail human vision perception, in particular how it relates to cinema, television, and video.
  • Describe various past and present video display technologies.
  • Describe various aspects of colour reproduction in video.
  • Explain how analogue NTSC video is created, recorded, transferred, and displayed.
  • Recognize various video test signals used to calibrate video equipment and explain their functions.
  • Operate a waveform monitor and explain its functions.
  • Operate a vectorscope and explain its functions.
  • Explain the processes of digital video and audio encoding, compression, storage, and playback.
  • Describe how both analogue and digital image-capture technologies work.
  • Explain the theory and principles behind RF transmission and terrestrial communications satellite operations.
  • Explain the purpose of time code and how to use it.
  • Identify various video processing equipment and describe typical plant organization and signal paths.
  • Select and request the proper equipment and connectors needed to set up a production project.
