Course Details

Film captures the attention of audiences and brings stories to life. Having a solid foundation in camera skills is essential in this modern media age. This course is designed for students interested in the basics of video and film camera operation; Students will explore professional camera set up, lighting, sound recording and editing of scenes. The art of sequencing your shots to tell a story both technically and aesthetically is also introduced. The hands-on approach enables students to gain experience and confidence using a professional video camera to shoot popular scenes used in news, corporate, online and film production.

  1. *A (32GB Class 10 SDHC UHS-I Memory Card up to 80MB) memory card AND headphones or earbuds with a 1/8” jack are REQUIRED for the duration of this course. This course can be completed completely online, however STUDENTS WILL NEED TO ATTEND THE BURNABY CAMPUS TO BORROW CAMERAS AND SUPPLIES, unless they have equivalent gear of their own, or access to such items by borrowing or renting equipment. The cameras used in this course are Cannon XA30. *This is not a self-paced course. You will be expected to be available and online as indicated on the course outline and directed by the instructor. It is important to have a stable and consistent internet connection to access course content. Course content, type and quality of assignments, and general standards for this online course are the same as classroom courses. To be successful in this online course, plan to spend 7-10 hours per week on your studies, starting Week 1.

  1. *This is not a self-paced course. Students are expected to participate ONLINE as indicated on the course outline and directed by the instructor. (No class May 23rd for Victoria Day long weekend) *Arrangements can be made to accommodate students who’s Time-zones or work schedules might conflict. *Use of a desktop or laptop computer is REQUIRED to participate in this course, along with a microphone in order to participate in the online sessions, and the ability to transfer an upload footage from an SD card. *This course can be completed completely online, however students are required to attend the Burnaby campus to borrow cameras and supplies, UNLESS they have equivalent gear of their own. *IF unable to attend the campus to pick up a the Cannon XA30 equipment that BCIT supplies for their three filming assignments, students must borrow or rent a DSLR or Video Camera that has full manual capabilities, a zoom lens or prime lens equivalent to a 35mm-125mm focal range, and a decent lavaliere microphone. *A (32GB Class 10 SDHC UHS-I Memory Card) memory card AND headphones or earbuds with a 1/8” jack are REQUIRED for the full duration of this course. *It is important to have a stable and consistent internet connection to access course content. Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate the proper procedures for setting up a camera.
  • Shoot a scene using correct white balance and differentiate colour balances.
  • Choose (and execute) the proper exposure of the camera given the lighting for a specific shot or sequence.
  • Explain how to professionally sequence a scene.
  • Use a microphone to capture professional quality audio.
  • Use a professional video camera to shoot a professional scene.
  • Compare and contrast different video camera types, and select the appropriate video camera given a specific scenario.
  • Properly set up a time code in a camera for the appropriate shooting scenario.
