Course Details

Interviewing is an essential part of information gathering for the media. Students will enjoy much hands-on learning, developing the ability to plan and execute successful media interviews with confidence. This course includes identifying effective and ineffective interview styles, researching interview subjects, and counteracting ‘spin’. Skills learned dovetail with BCST1144 ‘Writing for the Media' and, combined, offer the opportunity to vigorously stimulate your communication skill set.



This course was retired after the Fall 2018 term and is no longer offered through BCIT Part-time Studies.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:

  • Identify and explain inadequate interview styles
  • Define elements of effective interview elements and questions
  • Apply effective interview habits in written and oral forms
  • Construct interview questions for a variety of subjects
  • Cooperate with classmates on interview projects
  • Apply techniques aimed at counteracting messaging 'spin'
  • Find and research interview subjects
  • Design an effective interview plan on a tight deadline
  • Describe challenges of entertainment/celebrity interviews
  • Adjust interview tone to match topic of interview
  • Speak in front of a camera
  • Find his or her style as an interviewer
  • Complete an interview of his or her choice with confidence
