This directed-study course explores the organization of Canada’s high profile broadcast industry, including government communication policies, the rules and regulations generated by the CRTC, various codes of ethics, broadcast distribution units, media ratings mechanisms, music licensing, multicultural and educational broadcasting, along with current industry issues. Learners attend the first session and a final exam only—all other work is done from home with occasional instructor interaction.

At the end of this course, the student will be able to:
Identify the organizations that comprise the broadcast industry and related operations.
Describe the hierarchical organization of typical radio and television operations. |
Discuss the regulatory framework for the broadcast industry.
Explain the Radio and Television Regulations as circulated by the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) under the authority of the Broadcasting Act of 1991.
Define the role of audience measurement in the operation of radio and television stations.
Define the role of the Canadian Association of Broadcasters and its operation of industry self-regulation under the auspices of the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council, and its relationship to societal issues via codes of conduct.
Describe the operations of the cable industry in Canada.
Explain the operation of music licensing in Canada, in relation to its use in the broadcast industry.
Describe the operation of educational broadcasting in Canada.
