Course Details

Ever wonder why newscasters present certain stories from a particular viewpoint while omitting others? This course will examine the relationship between media and society trends that are influencing the media and the role it plays in shaping public opinion. This course will appeal to broadcasters and discerning media watchers. A critical view of the media's presentation of issues is encouraged. This class will rely on passionate discussion, debate and group participation.



This course was retired after the Winter 2013 term and is no longer offered through BCIT Part-time Studies.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course the learner will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an ability to critically analyze mass media.
  • Research a contemporary topic with a diverse source of information and organize it into a cohesive, written report.
  • Compile researched material into a structured oral presentation.
  • Function in a cohort group to successfully achieve objectives.
  • Constructively critique the work of a peer.
  • Demonstrate a basic knowledge of some mass communication theory.
